Familiar, yet unexpected, organized but fun too! Look a little closer and Hannah Quinn's 8/4 Chair just might surprise you. What looks like a tidy pile of boards at the lumber yard is actually a trompe l'oeil--wood grain laminate is used to create the illusion of a stack of lumber. Real boards only wish they were finished so beautifully! The name 8/4 (produced "eight-quarter") is a standard wood thickness and a common term in lumberyards. 

From a distance this chair may look like a simple stack of 8/4 maple lumber, but as you approach it the graphic elements overwhelm the natural ones. Thos is no rough-hewn timber! The precise lines of the edges and the flawless finish demonstrate precision, giving the piece an ironic playful tone.

This table was originally designed with the lobby of the California Hotel in mind. Once a thriving hotel with performances by the finest blues and jazz musicians. Now, as much as it is a landmark and historical site, it is a home to many. The rehabilitation and renovation of the hotel as low-income housing is a great step for the West Oakland community. The lobby of this hotel is the center of the action, the place everyone passing through will visit and it must bridge the gap between out siders and residents.

The lobby of the California hotel is not only a lobby but also the living room for the residents. The space is beautiful and grand and there is often movement and conversations echoing off the walls. The intimacy that one might feel at home in their living room is absent, as it was not intended as a home but as a hotel. A table between two chairs encourages independency as well as conversation, it can be a place to put a cup of coffee or a book. It is a basic piece of furniture that is comforting as it is there for whatever you wish to use it for.

This table creates an intimate setting between two seats. The beautiful and warm wood and the petite size help it perform its duty casually between those individuals who place their coffee cup or book, and plan to stay to chat with a buddy.
